Cupping? They're not bruises!

January 23, 2018

WHAT IS CUPPING?

Cupping is a healing technique used by some massage therapists for the purpose of pain management, increasing blood flow by decreasing inflammation, relaxation and well-being as a type of deep tissue massage.

THEY'RE NOT BRUISES

The most common misconception of cupping is that they leave bruises on your skin. In fact, the suction from the cups draws the blood to the level of the skin creating a vacuum below it. This causes new blood to rush in below, removing stagnation. In result, your skin is left with an ecchymosis, which means blood between skin layers caused by ruptured vessels.

WHY HAVE CUPPING DONE

If you experience tension, stiffness or pain, cupping may be a good treatment option for you. Muscles, adhesions, scars and joints all have a positive response to cupping due to the separation of tissue layers, allowing fluid to draw into the tissues. Cupping literally increases the extracellular fluids and ground substance between the layers of fascia. Clients usually will feel relaxation and an immediate increase in range of motion relative to fascial restrictions.
