Probiotic Prophylactic: Bacteria May Protect Critically Ill Patients Against PneumoniaA solution of Lactobacillus administered to patients on mechanical ventilators cut the incidence of pneumonia nearly in half, suggesting that probiotics may be useful for the prevention of hospital-acquired infection.

GOOD GERM: Microscopic image of Lactobacillus

Researchers at Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha, Neb., recently demonstrated that regular doses of probiotic bacteria given to hospital patients on mechanical ventilators resulted in fewer cases of pneumonia. The findings were published online June 3 in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

Probiotic Effects on Cold and Influenza-Like Symptom Incidence and Duration in Children

Pediatrics. 2009 Aug; 124(2):e172-9. Epub 2009 Jul 27.

RESULTS: Relative to the placebo group, single and combination probiotics reduced fever incidence by 53.0% and 72.7%, coughing incidence by 41.4% and 62.1%, and rhinorrhea (runny nose) incidence by 28.2% and 58.8%, respectively. Fever, coughing, and rhinorrhea duration was decreased significantly, relative to placebo, by 32% and 48%. Antibiotic use incidence was reduced, relative to placebo, by 68.4% and 84.2%. Subjects receiving probiotic products had significant reductions in days absent from group child care, by 31.8% and 27.7%, compared with subjects receiving placebo treatment.

CONCLUSION: Daily dietary probiotic supplementation for 6 months was a safe effective way to reduce fever, rhinorrhea, and cough incidence and duration and antibiotic prescription incidence, as well as the number of missed school days attributable to illness, for children 3 to 5 years of age.

These two studies demonstrate that if you want protection from various types of infections especially respiratory then the use of gut beneficial micro-organisms is worthwhile. If you wish further information on the benefits of the various gut microbes then ask for office handouts 275, 277 and 281. One must use these microbes on a regular basis to derive benefit, and if you would like to learn more, attend the info session on Wednesday night — next one is July 21st at 7 pm.ScientificAmerican.com

June 25, 2010 |Morphine and Other Pain Relief Drugs Used in Cancer Surgery May Spur Return of Malignancy

Researchers at the University of Minnesota published a study showing that doses of morphine similar to those used to ease pain actually spurred the growth of human breast cancer cells grafted into mice. Cancer seems to thrive on exposure to opioids, particularly morphine, the most widely used narcotic for relief of surgical pain. Tumors grow faster and develop more extensive networks of the blood vessels they rely on to feed their expansion—a process called angiogenesis, says Jonathan Moss, an anesthesiologist at the University of Chicago (U. of C.) Medical Center.

A similar risk for returning cancer occurs in patients who undergo general anesthesia. However, regional anesthesia, or a nerve block—is thought to reduce the stress of surgery on the body’s immune system. Weakened immunity in the aftermath of cancer surgery might promote recurrence later. Here’s why: when surgeons remove a tumor, they inevitably leave behind a few straggler cancer cells—and a metastasis is born. Drifting cancer cells are like invading bacteria, they spread when cancer is removed, and you need a functioning immune system to take care of them. When the immune system is suppressed, it’s less effective at doing that. Results from a 2006 study in Ireland and the U.S. suggest that patients who undergo surgery to remove breast or prostate cancer might be less prone to recurrence if they are administered regional anesthesia during their procedures, rather than general anesthesia alone. And this approach may be more effective at preventing the disease from returning and spreading than treatment with chemotherapy after the operation, says Marcel Durieux, an anesthesiologist at the U.V.A. Health System .

Another mechanism whereby morphine and morphine-like compounds effect the immune system is due to inhibition of NK cells (Natural Killer) activity. Morphine-like compounds result from the undigested protein in grain—gluteomorphs and dairy—case morphs refer to the book “Dangerous Grains” available in office.

Natural Killer Cells Are Made, Not BornScience Daily (Feb. 9, 2004) –

Scientists regard natural killer cells as a blunt instrument of the body’s immune defense system. Born to kill, infiltrating the sites of early tumors or infectious agents in the body.  Natural killer cells burst forth from the tonsils, lymph nodes and spleen, and destroy infected and cancerous cells.

Omega-3 May Protect Against Hearing Loss: Study as reported By Stephen Daniells, 11-Jun-2010, Nutra ingredients.com

American Journal of Clinical Nutrition ajcn.2010.29370“

Consumption of omega-3 fatty acids and fish and risk of age-related hearing loss” Authors: B. Gopinath, V.M. Flood, E. Rochtchina, C.M. McMahon, P. Mitchell

At least two servings of fish per week was associated with a 42% reduction in the risk of hearing loss in over 50 year-olds, compared with people who average less than one serving per week.

Similar reductions were observed with intakes of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, with increasing intakes associated with 14 per cent reductions in the risk of age-related hearing loss.

Other micronutrients have been linked to reducing the risk of age-related hearing loss. In 2007 scientists from Wageningen University reported that folic acid supplements delayed age-related hearing loss in the low frequency region in a study of 728 men and women between the ages of 50 and 70 (Annals of Internal Medicine, Vol. 146, pp. 1-9).

Another study, published earlier this year indicated a role for beta carotene and vitamins C and E, and the mineral magnesium in preventing both temporary and permanent hearing loss in guinea pigs and mice. The animal study was presented at the Association for Research in Otolaryngology’s annual conference in Baltimore in February 2009.

The fatty acids, most notably EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), have been linked to a wide-range of health benefits, including reduced risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and certain cancers, good development of a baby during pregnancy, joint health, and improved behaviour and mood.

Omega 3 fatty acids metabolites EPA/DHA act as anti-inflammatories due to their effect on a class of compounds called eicosanoids. When a food has excessive omega 6 fatty acids it is pro-inflammatory. The recommended diet in today’s culture has excessive 6 fats and thereby pro-inflammatory aggravating all inflammatory conditions. Food source 3 fats must be acted on by liver enzymes to make 3 fat metabolites EPA/DHA. This process is poor to negligible in most individuals. Cold water fish is a good source of 3 metabolites but comes with heavy metals mercury and cadmium, as well as, PCB’s and dioxin-like chemicals. Farm fish is just as bad if not worse. Supplements can be a good source but be certain that they have been processed to remove the contaminants.

The Role of the Lumbar Multifidus in Chronic Low Back Pain: A Review

Authors: Freeman MD, Woodham MA, Woodham AW : Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation 2009; 2: 142-6.

The lumbar multifidus muscle(s) play a key role in stabilizing the spine. Therefore, neuromuscular training directed at ‘neutral zone’ stabilization is thought to impact these muscles and the outcome of LBP, disability, recurrence and prevention. Lumbar multifidus muscles (LMM) are important stabilizers of this neutral zone, and dysfunction in these muscles is consistently associated with low back pain. This dysfunction may be the result of reflexive inhibition from the spine leading to atrophy in the LMM musculature and fatty replacement .This is from pain associated with the low back facet joints.

The low back pain is due to tightening of the facet joints and poor motion sensor (mechanoreceptor) signal to the brain which activates the process of pain in the brain and is corrected with joint manipulation and appropriate exercise.

One effective exercise for this problem in the low back is the bird-dog exercise. If you are not doing this exercise or are not certain how to do it then ask next time you are in the office. It is important that the exercise is done properly. In particular the pelvis should be squarely parallel to the floor when you raise the opposite arm and leg …….

The following is the multifidus musculature followed by the bird dog exercise.http://www.ab-core-and-stomach-exercises.com/images/multifidus.jpgBird Dog Exercise Ending Position
